Rice is harvested annually in California, typically in the fall. Once harvested and milled, it stores beautifully, making this a pantry staple we can carry beyond the growing season. Availability may still change between harvests.

Rice is such an everyday pantry staple, which makes how it’s grown matter even more to me. I loved this farm the minute I learned what they were doing. Instead of treating the ducks as separate from the crop, they made them part of the system. The ducks eat, fertilize, the rice grows, and the farm uses less water in the process. This is exactly the kind of food I want us finding more of.

Lopes Family Farms is a fourth-generation family rice farm in Princeton, California, with roots dating back to 1911.

Father-and-son farmers Bruce and Christopher Lopes began adopting duck-rice farming as a way to rethink how rice could be grown in drought-prone California. Inspired by an integrated farming method with roots in China and later developed in Japan, they raise ducks directly in the rice fields.

The ducks eat weeds and insects, fertilize the fields as they move through them, and help build healthier soil. The rice, in turn, provides food and shelter for the ducks. Today, Lopes Family Farms is working to show how regenerative agriculture can produce good food while using fewer resources.
